This 60-minute webinar will acquaint correctional nurses with the static and dynamic risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs for inmate suicide.  Essential therapeutic approaches to potentially suicidal inmates, as well as practical strategies for managing inmates who self-injure in the absence of true suicidal intent.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss with confidence the statistics related to suicides in prisons and jails.
  2. Identify individuals at high risk for suicide.
  3. Communicate the nurse’s role when caring for a patient at risk of suicide.
  4. Apply nursing interventions when caring for patients in correctional settings who are at risk of self-harm.

Brenda Fields
Brenda Fields RHIA, RN, PMH-BC, CCHP

Clinical Training and Development Manager, Mental Health

Ms. Fields is the clinical training manager for mental health for Centurion Managed Care Services. She has been a RN for 28 years, is Board Certified in Psychiatric Mental Health nursing and a Certified Correctional Health Professional.

Bill Elliott PhD, CCHP

Correctional Mental Health Consultant

. Dr. Elliott is has worked in the field of correctional mental health for nearly 50 years. Dr. Elliott was an Adjunct Asst. Professor of Criminology at Indiana State University for 25 years. He was a nationwide trainer for PESI, Inc., and is the author of one book, one book chapter, and several professional journal articles. He is currently a mental health consultant for NCCHC Resources, Inc. and, in that role, has conducted contract monitoring and provided technical assistance to jails and prisons across the country.
